What is the difference between mineral and chemical filters⁶?

The difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens are the ingredients they use to protect the skin.

Mineral filters usually contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide which act as a physical barrier on the skin’s surface and reflect the UV rays away from the skin. However, they are usually known to leave white cast on the skin, may feel heavier and need more effort to blend in properly. Many manufacturers that use mineral filters opt for their nanoparticles to reduce the white cast on the skin. However, nanoparticles can be harmful as the extremely small size allows them to penetrate deeply into the skin. Chemical filters absorbs UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. Thus, they penetrate the skin’s surface to provide protection. They usually feel lighter on the skin, don’t leave white cast and tend to have a smoother finish.

We use chemical filters into Urban Shield SPF30.

Some chemical filters are controversial and have even been banned in certain US states. Teoxane does not use these filters.
